Modern parents are so busy in their everyday activities that they often make the television their children’s baby sitter. They leave their children in front of the television for long hours just so they can go around doing their work. They rarely know that excessive hours of watching television can have a negative effect on their children. Television can have many harmful effects on a growing child, such as: poor performance in school, increasing inactivity or health issues, and behavioral problems.

 

Too much time in front of the TV reduces children’s learning in school. They don't have enough time to do their homeworks properly; therefore, their quality of their performance decrease. Children who watch a lot of TV have trouble paying attention to teachers because they are accustomed to the fast-paced visual stimulation on TV. They tend to also have a difficult time adjusting from being visual learners to learning by listening, as they do not talk to the family members. It is also said that they short attention spans, which makes it more difficult for them to concentrate on things and their education.

 

I’m pretty sure you know that watching television means physical inactivity. But did you know that inactivity has been linked to obesity and heart disease. In case you didn't know, now you do. So ask yourself this: Is it merely a coincidence that in the West — where people are spending enormous amount of time watching television — the rates of obesity and heart disease in people of all ages are rapidly increasing? Indeed, more and studies reveal the adverse health effects of watching television. A study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health indicates that, watching too much television can significantly increase the risk of developing obesity and type 2 diabetes. Another study carried out at the University of Rhode Island found that prolonged television watching decreases viewers’ sense of self-efficacy in maintaining personal health.And these are just a couple of studies among dozens. As you can understand, the side effects of watching a lot of TV on your health can be pretty damaging. So perhaps you’d be better off if you limited the time you spend keeping your body immobile staring at an electronic screen, don’t you agree?

 

Television is primarily a medium for entertainment and information. However, your kids may not be able to discriminate between the good and the bad content. As a result, they watch whatever catches their attention. Sometimes they might also develop a tendency to ape it. So, when the kids are exposed to violent acts even in something as simple as cartoons, they may carry those actions forward without realising the kind of consequences it can lead to. An aggressive behavioural pattern can account like: physical violence, such as biting, hitting, and kicking. Verbal hostility, like: sending threatening messages through emails, phone calls, or social media, or making threats against someone's life.

 

To sum up, as watching too much television has some harmful impacts on children such as : poor performance in school, health issues and behavioural problems, parents must mange the time spending by their children watching television. They should appoint some special times in order to control the children and the physical and mental health of them better.
